Why do some meals contain sugar?Updated 23 days ago

In general, we avoid refined sugar, cane sugar, and ingredients with added sugar.

However, we make a few small exceptions for certain traditional ingredients, such as:

  • Candied ginger
  • Vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • Mustard

These ingredients are traditionally produced, and their characteristic flavour cannot be achieved by simply mixing individual ingredients at home.

They are used only in very small and carefully controlled amounts. This allows us to strictly monitor the total sugar content of our meals, which averages under 12 g of sugar per meal.

For comparison: The German Nutrition Society recommends limiting the intake of free sugars to less than 10 percent of daily energy intake, which corresponds to around 50 g per day for an average adult.

Our meals are designed to be enjoyed as part of a varied, balanced, and nutrient rich diet, based on a wide range of vegetables and legumes.

Using our filter function, you can exclude meals that contain ingredients such as candied ginger, vegan Worcestershire sauce, or mustard.
